Membership Types and Eligibility

Member Eligibility

ACR membership is available to physicians who have been certified in a radiological discipline by the American Board of Radiology, the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College des medecins du Quebec, or are engaged in nuclear medicine and have been certified by a specialty board which is a members of the American Board of Medical Specialties or its Canadian equivalent.

Medical physicists who are certified, or considered the equivalent of certified by the American Board of Radiology, are eligible to be ACR members as well.

ACR members shall have the right to be appointed to commissions and committees, to hold elective office, and to be a member of the Board of Chancellors.

Associate Member Eligibility

A Physician who is engaged in the practice of radiology and who has completed an approved residency program in radiology and is otherwise eligible for membership in the College, but who has not been certified by the American Board of Radiology, the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College des medecins du Quebec, is eligible to be an associate member of the College.

A Physician who is engaged in nuclear medicine but is not certified by a specialty board, which is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties or its Canadian equivalent, is eligible to be an associate member of the College.

A Medical physicist who is engaged in the practice of medical physics and is otherwise eligible for membership in the College but who has not been certified by the American Board of Radiology, or its Canadian equivalent, is eligible to be associate member of the College.

An associate member has the right to be appointed to commissions and committees but shall not have the right to hold elected office, or be a member of the Board of Chancellors.

Allied Health Eligibility

MRI Scientists and Radiologist Assistants who have Registered Radiologist Assistant (R.R.A.) certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) are eligible to be ACR members.

ACR members shall have the right to be appointed to commissions and committees, to hold elective office, and to be a member of the Board of Chancellors.

Members in Training Eligibility

Members in training are physicians and medical physicists in the United States or Canada who have never been ACR members, and who occupy approved residencies, fellowships or are registered in a formal educational program in medical physics.

Member in training status shall normally terminate within six months following completion of the period of training. Those individuals who go directly from an approved residency to a fellowship program may continue as members in training until completion of the fellowship program. Within six months after completion of training, the members in training will automatically become a member of the College in the appropriate class of membership, unless he or she affirmatively declines membership.

A member in training shall have the right to be appointed to commissions and committees, but shall not have the right to hold elective office, or to be a member of the Board of Chancellors.

International Member Eligibility

International members are physicians and medical physicists practicing the specialty of radiology or medical physics outside the United States and Canada and who are certified in radiology, medical physics or eligible for such certifications, and are in good ethical standing in their respective countries.

An international member shall have the right to be appointed to commission and committees but not to hold elective office or to be a member of the Board of Chancellors.

International Member in Training Eligibility

International members in training are physicians and medical physicists who have never been ACR members, who occupy approved residencies, fellowship or are registered in a formal educational program in medical physics outside the United States and Canada. Those individuals who go directly from an approved residency to a fellowship program may continue as members in training until completion of the fellowship program.

An international in training member shall have the right to be appointed to commissions and committees, but shall not have the right to hold elective office, or to be a member of the Board of Chancellors.

Retired Member Eligibility

Retired member status may be conferred by the Board of Chancellors upon application of a member who is fully retired from professional practice and, who in the judgment of the Board of Chancellors, should be relieved from the payment of dues.

A retired member shall have the right to be appointed to commissions and committees, but shall not have the right to be a member of the Board of Chancellors. A retired member shall have the right to serve in elected office during the first six years following his or her retirement.

Residents and Fellows

The ACR extends complimentary membership to residents in diagnostic radiology and radiation oncology or to people who enter fellowship training immediately following residency training.  As long as your program director has notified the ACR of your enrollment in the program, you are automatically a complimentary member of the ACR.  If you are uncertain as to whether your program director submitted this notification, please contact the membership services department at membership@acr.org or 800-347-7748.

For individuals just completing training, the ACR offers a reduced rate on membership dues.  If you were an ACR member during your training, you simply need to pay your first dues invoice in order to maintain your membership.

Medical Students and Transitional Residents

The ACR does offer complimentary membership to medical students and transitional residents.  Interested individuals may apply by completing a Medical School Student/ Transitional Resident application form and returning the completed application with a letter from their program verifying their current status to the Membership Services Department at 1891 Preston White Drive, Reston, VA  20191-4397.  please contact the membership services department at membership@acr.org or 800-347-7748 with any questions about this membership category.
