We are pleased to share important and exciting news: Gail’s Law has officially passed the Wisconsin Legislature and is now headed to the Governor’s desk for signature. Governor Tony Evers has signaled that he intends to sign the bill into law.
This bipartisan legislation removes financial barriers to medically necessary supplemental and diagnostic breast imaging, allowing women and their healthcare providers to make evidence-based screening decisions based on individual risk.
WRS Member, Dr. Jennifer Bergin, shared:
"This legislation allows women and their healthcare providers to make evidence-based decisions about the most appropriate screening based on their risk, As a radiologist, I see firsthand how critical supplemental and diagnostic imaging can be for women with dense breast tissue and those at elevated risk. Mammography alone is not always enough. By removing financial barriers, Gail’s Law ensures that medical decisions are guided by clinical need, not cost. More cancers will be detected earlier, when treatment is most effective and outcomes are the best."
This victory reflects years of thoughtful, persistent advocacy by WRS members—testifying, educating lawmakers, answering questions, and serving as trusted clinical experts throughout the legislative process. Your professionalism and commitment to patient-centered care were instrumental in bringing this effort across the finish line.
A special thank you to the dedicated workgroup members Drs. Jennifer Bergin, Gregg Bogost, Anand Narayan, Mia Elezaby and Taj Kattapuram.
Thank you for your dedication to improving breast health access for women across Wisconsin. This is a meaningful milestone, and we are proud of what we have accomplished together.
